The Delightful Dungeness

Little did Captain GeorgeVancouver know, while exploring the Strait of Juan De Fuca at the north edge of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, when he named this area after a stretch of land that reminded him of a point on the English Channel called Dungeness that that name would become synonymous with the most commonly available crab in the Pacific Northwest, the crab you see piled high on ice in markets.

Cooking crab in Alaska

Docked in Haines, we visited The Crab Man to purchase his crabs at $5.00 each right off of his fishing boat on the dock. Deciding to purchase one to eat for dinner and then one to pick for crab cakes or Crab Benedict we lugged our new 8 friends over to the boat anticipating some good eating. Andrea set about preparing them. Cleaning them on the dock brought some uninvited guests, large Ravens seeking the remnants of crab left on the dock.

Later in the evening we set down around the table, hot butter with garlic waiting to dip the tender chunks of boiled crab in. Delicious! Great eating and good conversation made a memorable evening in Alaska for the 4 Gals on a Boat. Thank you crabs!!
